Microsoft, today, released a new update to its entertainment line of Zune devices and Zune software, the update is titled 3.1. Cesar of ZuneInsider.com says "starting today, Zune gets a little update which will bring a handful of free games, a refresh to Zune Social and incremental improvements to the software." The new games include Checkers, Sudoku, and Space Battle. The Zune Social has also gotten a "visual refresh to make it easier to navigate, as well as adding a new feature called 'like minded listeners,' which will let you see how compatible your music tastes are with other listeners and friends." And of course, the new update features some stability issues and common bug fixes. Check out more information over at his post at ZuneInsider.com. Gregm164 of the Zunited community had an interesting theory about Cesar's words in his post, adding: He says "starting" today, suggesting that it will be going on for a while, and also "handful" of games makes it seems like theres (sic) more in store in terms of games (sic)
It definitely looks like we well have another update in a couple of days, possible in conjunction with the [New Xbox Experience]? Is this finally the Zune Xbox (sic) integration we've been waiting for? Tell us what you think at the thread. |

CNET is reporting that Zune will be lowering the prices of its flash-based devices on Wednesday for the holiday season. With the economy tanking and the holidays looming, Microsoft is hoping to salvage some Zune sales by chopping prices. The new prices will be $99, $139, and $179 for the Zune 4gb, 8gb, and 16gb, respectively. The Zune 4 will be taking a $30 price cut, while the Zune 8gb will only be $10 and the Zune 16gb will only be $20. Keep in mind that the 4gb is technically discontinued. I, however, expect them to be about $0.99 more expensive, at $99.99, $139.99, and $179.99; we'll just have to wait and see what happens. But the devices aren't the only thing getting cheaper, Zune accessories are also going to be cutting down on prices. Microsoft is expected to make an announcement on Wednesday. CNET reports that that it'll take effect in Canada on Friday. Microsoft didn't report if a new device will be introduced for the holiday season nor if the prices will be definite after the season. |

SeattlePI.com reported Monday about Microsoft's new marketing strategy - the Zune software. Unlike Apple's commercials, which primarily feature iPods (and silhouettes dancing with iPods, can you say "GAG!?"), Microsoft is pushing a new ad campaign devoted entirely to the software that ties its ecosystem all together. SPI interviewed Chris Stephenson, marketing manager, who said that Mixview is actually "a reason to download the Zune software." Zune hopes that the new ads make people download the new software and somehow "everything else will flow," inlcuding ZunePass subscriptions and eventually Zune sales will boost. The Zune's distant runner-up status aside, Stephenson said the Zune has found better-than-average success among blacks, Hispanics and 18-to-24-year-olds, though he wouldn't go into specifics. Encouraged, the Zune team has sharpened its marketing to those constituencies....
And given Apple's success, it's not clear Zune's tack - giving consumers connections to the music itself, and pushing the Zune's software more than the device - can help it close the gap with Apple.
But the strategy is helping Zune make progress on one very important front: outrunning Microsoft's awkward, uncool vibe, which has clung to everything from the long-delayed Vista operating system that failed to wow, to that first clunky brown Zune. One thing is for sure, the underrated and always-stuck-in-the-back-row aspect of the Zune is finally getting its 15 minutes of fame. We just hope it works out for them.

Zune released a new TV spot (earliest caught on TV was Monday, November 17th, on NBC) featurng apparently Zune-lover and rapper: Common. The commercial also features the loved and aesthetically pleasing Mixview. It shows the relations withing music (six degrees, if you will) and who inspired whom. However, it's not really about the Zune. It's more about the Zune software 3.0. Check out the video and make sure to discuss it in our forum. Thread. |
